When Faith Feels Off: The Difference Between Loving God and Trusting the System
When Faith Feels Off: The Difference Between Loving God and Trusting the System
Have you ever sat in church and felt it?
Not something loud or obvious… but a quiet tension.
A disconnect you couldn’t quite explain.
Everything looked right.
Everything sounded right.
But deep down—you knew something wasn’t.
And maybe you pushed that feeling down for a while.
Because questioning felt wrong.
Because doubt felt dangerous.
Because you didn’t want to be “that person.”
But what if that tension wasn’t rebellion?
What if it was discernment?
When Faith Gets Tied to Systems Instead of Jesus
For many of us, faith didn’t start with Jesus—it started with a system.
A building.
A routine.
A structure.
We learned:
Go to church
Give your tithe
Trust leadership
Don’t question too much
And over time, something subtle happens…
We begin placing our faith in how faith is practiced
instead of Who our faith is in.
That’s the shift.
Because there is a difference between:
Faith in God
andFaith in a system about God
And if we’re honest, a lot of us were taught the second one first.
Why People Feel “Triggered” When Things Are Questioned
When conversations about the church get uncomfortable, reactions can be strong.
Some people feel validated—like someone finally put words to what they’ve been sensing.
Others feel defensive—even angry.
Why?
Because when your identity is tied to a system,
questioning the system feels like questioning your faith.
But they are not the same thing.
You can love Jesus deeply
and still ask hard questions about the structures surrounding Him.
In fact… you should.
The Hard Truth: Not Everything Done “In Jesus’ Name” Reflects Jesus
This is the part that many people don’t want to sit with.
But it matters.
Because throughout history—and even now—
people have used:
Scripture
Authority
Influence
…to justify things that look nothing like Christ.
That doesn’t mean Jesus is flawed.
It means people are.
And when we blur that line, we risk walking away from God
when what we really needed to walk away from was dysfunction.
Faith in Your Faith vs. Faith in God
There’s a powerful distinction that changes everything:
You can have:
Faith in your routines
Faith in your church experience
Faith in what you’ve always been taught
…without actually placing your faith in God Himself.
Because real faith in God will:
Stretch you
Challenge you
Call you out of comfort
It won’t always feel neat or predictable.
It won’t always fit inside a structure.
But it will always lead you closer to truth.
So… What Do You Do When Things Don’t Feel Right?
This is the question so many people are quietly asking.
“If I’m questioning things… what now?”
Here’s where to start:
1. Don’t Ignore the Nudge
That discomfort? Pay attention to it.
God often uses tension to wake us up—not push us away.
2. Separate God from People
People will fail you.
Systems will disappoint you.
God won’t.
If something feels off, don’t run from Him—run to Him.
3. Get Back to Scripture (Not Just Interpretations of It)
Not what someone said about it.
Not what you’ve always heard.
Read it. Wrestle with it. Ask questions.
Truth holds up under pressure.
4. Ask Better Questions
Instead of:
“Is this allowed?”
Ask:
“Does this reflect Jesus?”
5. Give Yourself Permission to Process
You don’t have to have everything figured out overnight.
Faith isn’t built in a moment.
It’s refined over time.
The Goal Isn’t Deconstruction—It’s Clarity
There’s a lot of talk right now about walking away from faith.
But that’s not the goal.
The goal is:
stripping away what’s false
so you can clearly see what’s true
Because when you remove the noise…
what’s left is Jesus.
And He’s not confusing.
He’s not manipulative.
He’s not hidden behind layers of performance.
He’s clear.
He’s steady.
He’s truth.
Maybe This Isn’t You Losing Your Faith
Maybe…
This is you finally finding it.
Not the version you inherited.
Not the version you performed.
But the real thing.
The kind of faith that isn’t built on systems—
but on a relationship that can’t be shaken.
